I Finally Figured Out How to Successfully Use PopUps

So I have figured out how to use popups in a way that gets results. This is HUGE! I have tried unsuccessfully over and over again to use popups in a way that got results. I almost gave up on using them altogether. I am now using a function of Premium List Magnet that I didn’t even knew existed until last week. This is MUCH different than anything I’ve read about on using popups. Really pumped about these findings :)

  • Those look good. I see tha you but them up on your main site. I am not a big fan of the pop up and this far have only done it on my small sites.

    Do you think that if the content is good people are fine with a pop up on your main site.

    good to see even a veteran like you is still learning. I cant wait until my site reaches critical mass and i can start experimenting with this stuff. for now its just the basics, best spinner and 1 way links

    Jason…I actually think these work best if the video provides good content that is targeted to the topic of the blog post.

    I will track bounce rate on these posts and see if it gets worse. My guess is that it will actually improve time on site.

    The 30% CTR of the Brad Pilon popup leads me to believe that this will work extremely well. Plus I’m making sales every other day with that popup on just a few posts.

    @mikemc007,

    I still feel like a beginner…at least I approach this stuff like that. It is nice to have large numbers of natural traffic coming in, because you can test things quickly.

    You will get there :)

    Thanks Rusty for this excellent tip. I have a copy of PLM and had thought of providing a more focused report for each type of post.

    I had not considered the video option.

    Thanks

    Peter

  • I managed to buy the plugin when it was on sale at 27.00 and I also picked up Profitstheme as well. I am starting to buy everything these guys put out because its all great stuff and they are way ahead of the curve. I would advise everyone to get on their list for future products. Once my traffic increase i will definitely take advantage of this method. Thanks Rusty!

  • Great post Rusty.

    In your opinion, what’s considered a high bounce rate?

  • Rusty,

    Thanks for sharing. I got PLM with the discount back when you recommended it before and I also had no idea of this capability. I think I’ll try the video ad with some of my older posts.

  • I have one other question for you. If this works well for posts how do you think it would work on download pages. This post got me to thinking…

    what if I had a video exit pop on my download page with a friendly suggestion to checkout product a.

    For example…
    Say someone comes to FBB and decides to opt in for your abs blue print report. They get sent to the download page get their free report and close the window. When they do that an exit pop appears with a good video and says something about the report and how clicking the link will take them to a site with more great ab stuff that they may like.

    What are your thoughts on an approach like that.

  • joelj:

    How do I contact you personally? I live in the Seattle area and already make 6 figures from my blog but could use some expertise in the traffic generation techniques you cover on this site. Let me know if you are available for private consulting work.

  • Josh:

    Awesome tips as usual. Was thinking about getting premium list magnet for a while now.. this just sealed the deal.

  • Great tips. PLM is awesome and offers a great variety of tools for the website. It also includes things that other people offer for the same price, but separately.

  • Hey Rusty,

    Awesome Tip. Wasn’t aware of PLM but am using something similar to get likes instead of emails :o )

    Dude you got my creative juices flowing with example2 “Head to brad’s site now” …

    A Crazy Idea:
    Wouldn’t it be cool to have a small text under the logo saying “advertise here” and use that to monetize your page?

    Thinking of doing something similar by using adsense on the grey out but don’t know if the Big G will throw a fit.

    Your thoughts?

  • Rusty – Excellent way to use PLM…now YOU just need to make some videos for us that we can use with this method ;)

  • mikemc007:

    hey Rusty where can i get your new mens banner from the 1 with the guy doing a tricep dip?

  • Greggg:

    Jason – test the exit pop up on a download page for sure. My assumption is why exit pop them like that because you already have them on the list and can mention that report, ebook, etc. in your email sequence.

    Here’s a sample of a download page with the recommendation right on it. http://www.massbuildingtips.com/muscle-building-thanks.html

    But you never know, your exit pop idea might get a higher CTR than my pure text with link. Don’t know unless you test!

  • Greggg:

    And yes, Rusty, eventually I’ll get around to putting VIMB on there and see how it does! ;-)

    Of course, I have to completely revamp my own course and get it out there.

    @Peter,

    Try using a video…something that makes people curious to play the video. It works well.

    @deek67,

    A member of our mastermind group has an awesome blog created with Profits theme. He doesn’t want me to give away the URL, but he ranks really well for all of his key terms, has an awesome funnel built in on the backend, etc. I will be buying products from these guys for a long time to come.

    @fitness2239,

    If you can keep a little under 8o% overall, that is good. It is tougher on a higher volume site (Fitness Black Book is at 83% overall). My best bounce rate is this training blog (37%).

    @Jason,

    I like your thinking. Maybe have a video that autoplays and tells them to enjoy their product…and lightly suggest a complimentary product or something. Yuo could certainly test it.

    @joelj,

    I don’t really do private consulting. I really want to focus on helping as many people as possible rather than spending a lot of time on one client.

    @Josh,

    Yes…Welly Mulia makes amazing products. I’m a big fan now!

    @Vaclav,

    It is like 3 products in one. Profits Theme is as well.

    @Adam,

    It sounds like a good idea to test out. There are al sorts of tricky things you could do with that popup.

    @Jeremy and Kim,

    I’m thinking of outsourcing someone to create a few of those animated videos where someone draws on a dry erase board while I talk. It cost $5,000 a pop…so I may wait until the big spike in sales that happens in Feb and March…then reinvest some of the extra profits into some really cool videos that affiliates could use.

    @mikemc007,

    I need to load that one up on the affiliate banner page…Yavor from http://relativestrengthadvantage.com created these and was kind enough to let everybody use them. If you do use them…make sure and maybe send a link his way or something. His site is awesome!

    @Gregg,

    No worries…if Vince’s product is converting well, then stick with that. If not, I’d love you to test out VIMB :)

  • Kris:

    Adam: definitely do not use Adsense on a popup, that will most surely get you banned if they notice it since it’s against their terms of service.

  • Kris:

    I’m gonna try the video popup on one of my pages that gets a few hundred search visitors per day, very excited to see the results. I will let you know how it works out.

    Btw I feel relieved to see that an awesome site like Fitness Black Book has a bounce rate of 83%, which is almost exactly the same as mine. I had been a bit worried about the bounce rate since I’ve read many marketers claiming that it is way too high.

    Honestly, I don’t think Google uses bounce rate. They have publicly stated that they don’t use analytics data, but they can tell if the user hits the back button to do another search for the same query. Therefore I make it my no.1 priority to not give the user a reason to search again.

  • @ Greggg

    The exit pop is not to get them on another list. I am looking for a better CTR.

    @ Rusty
    That was what I was thinking.

  • Greggg:

    I know. Read it again. I’m not suggesting you use it to get them on the list. If it’s the download page you already have them on a list. I’m saying test the exit pop vs having the link on the download page as I referenced above and see which does better.

    Hope that clears it up.

  • Has anyone else’s rankings dropped over the last couple of weeks due to that updated panda algorithm. If so, are you guys doing anything about it?

  • Kris:

    My rankings dropped on some keywords, traffic decrease is 20-25%. I’m experimenting with varying the anchor text more, some of my posts that are standing strong have pretty varied anchor texts.

  • Thanks Kris. I think my rankings dropped cause I used the same anchor text a bit too much (over 50% same)

  • jimmybloggs91:

    Hey Rusty,

    completely random question:

    Do you have an ETA for that visual impact cardio program that you mentioned a while back?

    I have a new site now that would work very well with that and I cant find anything too good already in the market

  • admin:

    Keith,

    Google is being really unpredictable right now. Keep me updated on what happens to your traffic, my guess is that it will come back.

    jimmybloggs91,

    I’m aiming for Feb 2012. I need to revamp the heck out of it and add to it. Then I need to write the sales page (which is the toughest part of the process). I want it to be the “go-to” cardio product on the market.

    -Rusty

  • Keith,
    I had the same problem with the latest update. My traffic took a nose dive of over 60 percent in one day. It sucks because I was at 480-ish visitors per day and it went downhill overnight.

    My traffic levels now fluctuate from 140 to 220 per day for the last 2 weeks- since the update.

    I figure a couple more weeks and it will bounce back. Meanwhile I have continued with link building, also varying anchor text and putting up content. We will see what happens.

NEW Affiliate Banners!
I hired out a couple different graphic designers to create a bunch of new affiliate banners.

Here is a preview of one I just had designed. I had this made in a bunch of different sizes...

I'm buying high-end stock images with really attractive men and women. They will all be stylish.

And Yavor of "Relative Strength Advantage" created a new men's banner that looks cool and has the same feel as the woman's banner above. Here it is.
