Targeting Keywords Your Competition Doesn’t Know About.
Even though I put the words “your competition” in the title of this post, I don’t think competition matters in the fitness niche. The demand is ever increasing and it is hard for people to find useful information that actually works —> which is where you come in. Anyways…this video is about a unique way to find keywords that people are searching for, that most marketers won’t know about.
This is protected content.

Seems like the basics are really where it’s at! Looking forward to the 2011 summer case study.
Looks like a great tool to use!
Just wondering how Squidoo, WordPress and Hubpages are cracking down?
Looking forward to the next case study.
-Sam
@ Sam
I know I had my wordpress.com websites removed a few months ago (within one month of creating them) because they contained affiliate links.
Recently my hubpages were moved from “published” to “drafts.”
I took all affiliate links out and only had one link (rss) to my site and they still didn’t approve it. I emailed them and they said it’s because my personal site “promoted an ebook” … forget it!
I’ve heard a few people mention Squidoo is doing the same so I figure they’ll hit me up eventually. I did notice that they’ve taken out the HTML sidebar so you can’t put in the big banners anymore … having said that the Squidoo pages do look a bit nicer with the redesign though.
Hey Rusty,
Thanks for the video; IKS tool will help find some new key words and domains.
Looking forward to the new case study…… Would also be interested in seeing a small case study on how to make affiliate sales from low traffic sites ( 100 visitors per day) like you talked about in the video. Sometimes it seems easier to have 20,30 or more smaller keyword domain sites each getting 100 visitors per day but not sure how to make them convert.
I’m still having a hard time getting my site up to 1,000 visitors per day. I have two sites at about 300 to 600 per day and every now and then a bump to about 900 but can’t sustain that traffic. I think the problem is with my keyword research…. and not sticking to the basics. This post is a good reminder that its all about good keyword research and creating good content.
Thanks for all the help Rusty and everyone in the group; this program is really a great resource.
@ Sam and Kevin – also having a hard time with Hubpages and Squidoo. Had to remove some affiliate links to keep them published.
Best – Mike
Hi everyone here on fitnessblogtraining.
Kasper from Denmark and this is my first post here. I have been following along for the past year and have seen you all evolve. Fantastic.
I have been building my site (fortiusfitness.com) a little backwards as what Rusty recommends. I have developed my products and my funnel first before targeting traffic.
And this is what I’m working on now. I have found this to be the most difficult and frustrating part of it all. It’s so easy to get confused and paralyzed at what strategies work the best for link building, traffic generation and what services to use. Especially if you have signed up to many internet marketers email lists and let you get sucked into the warrior forum.
Right now I’m around 100 visitors a day and just can’t seem to break into 100+.
So I’m all in for your plans on Focusing on the Fundamentals. What I personally need is to get all the “noise” out of my strategy and focusing on what really matters.
Thanks again to everyone who participate here – I have learned a lot from you all.
What a great tool. I do have a question for anyone that can help. I have found about 15 keywords that get massive amounts of traffic in phrase math. some from 50K-1,000,000/month. I actually found that a .com/ and-or .net/.org were available for all of them. the problem is that my competition was anywhere from 300K-1.2 million. would i be better off buying the domain, putting up content, and then selling it instead? i don’t think i would have a chance trying to rank it on the first page of google with so much competition. your thoughts….
I would love to have a new case study. I think those are the best way to learn after watching your previous one.
Thanks for the service!
@ Sam,
Like Kevin was saying…they are simply getting strict in what you and and can’t publish. They are especially strict with fitness stuff…I’m guessing I may have had something to do with that
Anyway, there are always new Web 2.0 sites to publish your articles on.
@ Mike,
I will work on showing how to make money from sites with less traffic. I will also try and make it much less complicated to get decent traffic levels. Instead of trying every trick in the book…I will focus on maybe just 1-2 traffic strategies.
@ Kasper,
I LOVE the way your blog is set up…absolutely outstanding! Honestly, I spent the past 15 minutes doing some checking to see where some of your posts are being ranked in Google. You are on page 3 and 4 for a lot of your target terms. This tells me that you are just some decent link building away from having your blog really take off in a big way. Again…one of the most impressive fitness blog setups I have ever seen. It is like a Ferrari without gas…we just need to link build to this sucker.
@ Adam,
Are you getting the exact phrase as a domain? As long as it is the exact words without hyphens or words after it, you would be surprised how well they will rank with just a little bit of content. I’d say grab at least a few, put up content and if they rank well…snatch up the rest and repeat.
@ jfelt,
Case studies are the best method of learning…and very few people who teach internet marketing ever do them (mainly because they aren’t able to duplicate their success…they got there by luck). I love doing case studies to show people what works today. A decent amount of pressure, but also pretty fun!
-Rusty
@Rusty
Yes sir, it is the exact keyword with nothing else. I will do what you recommend and let you know how it goes. Thank you!
Rusty – thank you so much for your kind words. They mean a lot to me in this, for me, frustrating period.
A main reason why I’m a little confused is keywords and how they rank. I have some keywords that have very little competition that should rank well, but doesn’t despite link building. Then I have a really competitive keyword that goes straight into top 10 without any link building what so ever, and is the main reason why my blog went from 50 visitors to 100 in a matter of days.
See, that is why I feel I’m a little lost in all this. If I just knew what works I could focus on that.
I feel i have the keyword research figured out. Now I scratch my head to find any connection between why some posts ranks easily and others don’t no matter what I do.
Am I at the mercy of google or what strategy is a surefire way to get all your posts ranked? A post on that would help me out big time (and others I think).
Thanks again Rusty for all your support and guidens.
Rusty,
That’s so funny because that’s exactly what I was thinking … they’ve been bombarded by the fitness/celebrity pages for the past year or so … it’s all your fault!
Love the new tool, can’t wait to put it to use.
I have had many of my Squidoo pages taken down, but like Rusty said there are many other 2.0 sites out there.
Thanks for the tips
@ Kasper
Great site. I don’t think it will be long before you get good traffic.
Hey Rusty,
I was wondering about google sniper sites (I know a bit off topic).
Is it as simple as getting the domain (www.celebnameworkout.com) and then posting it to 1 way links and perhaps some high PR sites manually and then just waiting for google to rank you site number one?
Cheers.
I think your idea of doing a “back-to-basics” real life example is brilliant. Maybe call it “Project Rusty” or “Project 500″ and get it to 500 visits a day (what can I say, I’m a hardcore Fight Club fan)
I would love to see you model the kind of blogs most of us are building. For example a single person blogging about health and fitness and trying to build a mini-authority site we are passionate about. Then using that blog to build a loyal group of readers we can recommend some products to that we believe in.
Your last Muscle Building site was awesome to watch but it seemed to use too many “advanced” ideas and techniques.
Also a quick final note on what you said at the start of the post about competition (it’s a little off your point but hopefully relevent).
From my experience the fear of “competition” is way over rated.
Someone who is interested in health and fitness will follow and buy from many different sources not just one. For example someone into building abs won’t just buy one program or book. They might get Rusty’s free course, get “Truth About Abs, get my ab course Spartan Abs, get your ab course. I actually encourage people to use many different sources and take what works for themselves out of each. That’s the way I gain knowledge.
My point is there is room for many, many people and viewpoints in the health&fitness niche and the guys you thought were competition may turn out to be great allies.
Damn! Thats a sweet tool. So happy its only $12. Definitely investing in that.
BTW – My site (kinobody.com) just hit a page rank of 3. Only been live for 5 months. Feels good. Not exactly sure what caused the boost in page rank. But I’m pretty sure its forum links.
Congrats Greg on pr 3. Concidentally, I logged on to ask whether actively pursuing a higher pr is
1) doable
2) worth doing
3) or does it just happen.
4) does it have any real impact
5) or is it not worth the time to read this comment, ie not really at all relevant
I also went to pr 3 on one of my other site and curious as to what you all think.
You know what.
Just got the IKS tool but it seems like its not compatible for macs. So just a warning for those with macs.
If anyone does have a mac and figures out how to use it that would be cool.
@ Kasper,
I’ll help you figure this out. Honestly, you have done most of the hard work already.
@ Kevin,
Yeah…it it funny I just saw Seth Godin speak last week (He owns Squidoo). Glad he didn’t know I was the guy who cracked the code to get banners down the sidebar
It was fun while it lasted!
@ TF4U,
Yes…it really is that simple to setup and rank Sniper sites. There is a guy who is part of our group who makes a full-time income from nothing but sniper sites. You can cheery pick great terms if you can get an exact domain match in .com, .net, or .org.
@ Bova,
Yep…what I will probably end up doing is showing a lot more of what I do on Fitness Black Book. For instance just found a plugin that helps posts rank better. Tested it on a post I have been trying to get rank high for a long time and now it is high up on page one.
I’m also out there trying some pretty cool stuff with Youtube videos. An experiment in using a Youtube video from someone else, embedding it, but having the embedded video on my blog rank in Google…and not just the Youtube URL.
I’ll stick to reporting back the basic stuff for the next couple of months…but I am messing around with some pretty exciting “ninja stuff” this summer as well
@ Greg,
Bummer that the tool doesn’t work for Macs!
@ hyhyisso,
As far as PR goes, not really a big deal. Fitness Black Book has been PR4 or a loooong time, but kicks the butt of many PR5-PR6 sites traffic-wise. That being said…it always feels good to get a boost.
-Rusty
Thanks for the feedback Rusty.
I was on the jlforum and found an awesome free report from one of the members about one way links.
http://jlforums.com/profile/?u=3950
Sam
Hey Rusty, would you care to share what the plugin is?
Kasper, I went through that at the beginning to. You eventually breakthrough, but I’ve heard many new website owners talk about this, mentioning the Google sandbox effect.
From what I understand, it’s just a theory, but it’s the idea that google delays putting your posts on the first couple of pages for a couple months, regardless of SEO, to push writers to focus on writing high quality posts instead of focusing solely on SEO.
*too
Hey Rusty
Hope your well..been a while. I have to say your timing is perfect as always. I have just been sat here putting a plan together about getting back to basics on my blog because my traffic has stalled and i think i have been too distracted away from the the fundamentals which is producing good content I can rank for.
So I thought I will check in with you and FBB to see what is happening and there it is the perfect article for what I need right now. It has freaked me out a little but thanks mate for having the perception to realize what a lot of us needed but wouldn´t say. Looking forward to the new project
Cheers
Howard
@ Ahmed
My PR2 site is 9 month old so i wont catagorize it as new. What is strange is that a high competion keyword can rank fast and a keyword that is very low in competition dont rank at all.
All my sniper sites with exact domain have ranked high very very fast. Why dont they go through a fluctuation?
@ Rusty
Im looking forward to that. As of now i feel my keyword selection is hit or miss that im not in control of.
Great stuff Rusty, I just launched my new blog this past thrusday, so I can’t wait for you to start talking about the fundamentals this summer
-Keith
Hey Keith
I like your the Tweet, Facebook Like and Google +1 buttons before and after your posts.
Are they from a certain plugin?
Thanks
Hey Bova,
Ya its the “Tweet, Like, Google +1 and Share” pluging, really easy to use.
@Kasper didn’t realize that your site was that mature. I’ve noticed what you’re talking about with the celebrity posts… my celebrity articles have the most competition but also rank the highest/bring in the most sales.
I have a feeling it’s because I focus more on them and get more backlinks, but I’ve started using a back-linker to the lower ranking posts and they’re starting to move up.
My site is nearly as mature as yours so I’m not sure what’s going on because I’m floating in the 600-900 range with jumps up to 3k on movie releases/celebrity workout.
BTW just trying to help, I’m by no means even close to an expert but I’ve made my mistakes. When you look your posts up on google, how far back are they usually?
Additionally, you think there is any chance you’ve been keyword stuffing/spamming by accident?
@ Ahmed,
My keyword density is between 1-3%.
I have tried a lot of automated back linking services without much result. SEO Link Wine being the worst. They promise up to 4 article posts a day but none of my 50 submitted articles got posted more than max 20 times.
Now I try Article Marketing Robot combined with a plugin called pingback optimizer to get the links indexed.
Im also testing with .EDU blogs and a new plugin by Andy Fletcher to give you immediate links and some automated bookmarking.
Are you using automated linking services?
Yeah and that percentage is perfect.
Just started using SubmitEaze a couple weeks ago, seems to be having a minuscule effect so far.
How do you like AMR?
I like AMR because its a one time investment, and you have full control of how many links you want to blast out every day.
I have a difficult time determing if is has any effect. But so i have with any linkbuilding method i have used.
Exactly what I’m going through here haha. I was deciding between SubmitEaze/AMR, liked them because of the one time fee, but if this has a smaller effect than I want, I’ll switch to one way links.
I have successfully set up my first celebrity workout blog and im on page 2 with my basic onpage seo. i got someone to build me backlinks of pr 3 to 7 but no of them have being indexed. please anyone give advice on how to index them fast.
@fresh4la
Have you pinged the backlinks?
yes i have and even submitted the rssfeeds.
